Fed: Debate on stem cell laws too slow: Carr

New South Wales Premier BOB CARR says debate on laws paving the way for embryonic stemcell research is too slow and needs to be resolved.

Embryonic stem cell research opponent RON BOSWELL yesterday succeeded in having theproposed laws referred to a committee for investigation in the Senate.

The bill will now be investigated by the Senate's Community Affairs Legislation Committee, while debate in parliament is tipped to last at least another two weeks.

But Mr CARR -- a strong supporter of embryonic stem cell research -- says the timetablefor voting on the laws is too slow.

Mr CARR says he wants Australian scientists to be uninhibited in using embryonic stemcells available, surplus to IVF treatment, to help people who are suffering.

He's vowing to keep the pressure on over the issue.
