NSW: Terror and togetherness keep New Year's Eve crowds at home

SYDNEY, Jan 1 AAP - High winds, security concerns and the desire to see out a difficultyear with family and friends at home kept New Year's Eve crowds down in Sydney, Lord MayorFrank Sartor said today.

Crowds were down by 30 per cent on last year, with around 450,000 people turning outto celebrate by the harbour last night.

"The crowds were a bit lower than previous years," Mr Sartor told reporters.

"In a sense slightly lesser crowd numbers make it more comfortable so it doesn't botherme in the slightest.
